Ashoreschool.com: Fall 2009 Newsletter

It's been a wonderful summer to work toward our goal of providing a free, interactive educational resource for the new sailor. We have continually added, expanded, and polished the site so you would gain more confidence in directing your students to our preparation lessons and tools.

Thanks to your referrals, our efforts are paying off: By the middle of September, we had received more new visitors than any previous total month. In fact, if the rate continues at the same pace, we will double August's results.

Our Promise
To clarify our purpose and existence, Ashoreschool.com agrees to exist to supplement and support instructor-lead classes, not to compete with them. We hope to help the new sailor as they prepare for your classes (at no additional cost), not direct them to another school or program. We are not here to "certify", we are here to help.

Free Links
In an effort to help your students be better prepared for instructor-lead
classes, we are expanding the ability to include our free lessons and
tools directly within your own website. We have built a special section
for instructors and webmasters allowing them to 'copy' links, buttons,
and menus from Ashoreshoolsite and add them for free
on their own web pages and blogs.

We know "Give, Give, Give…"

New Lessons and Tools Added

Lessons

NAVRules
This month we added Lesson 6, our NAV Rules section which includes a number of excellent components:
  •  A fun hierarchy video with eFlash cards
  •  USCG Nav Rules PDF with over 80 eFlash cards on the subject
  •  The Handbook of the Nautical Rules of the Road written by Chris Llana and George Wisneskey

Learning from Others
Bill Biewenga, one of America's most accomplished offshore sailors, (37 transatlantic crossings; four round the world races) contributed two excellent life lessons to our Teachable Moments section.
Plus
Sailing Instructors Michael Hoye and Gary Sprague contributed to our new Safety Tips section.

We are always looking for more Teachable Moments and Safety Tips. Now that the season is winding down please get involved and send us your life lesson!

Tools
Pop-Up Glossary
In trying to find the right glossary, we had a couple of challenges; most were covered with Google ads, (which were distracting) and most included a lot of terms that were not relevant for the new sailor. So we created our own. It's neat and clean, and pops up in its own window.

Beaufort Scale
While the Beaufort Scale is not on the lips of every new sailor, it is an important part of learning to understand and describe sea conditions. Just as we did with the Glossary, It's neat and clean, (no Google ads) and pops up in its own window.

Weather and Tide Links
Bill Biewenga is a weather guy. He lives it, and when he included his list of favorite weather/tide websites in his lesson WEATHER TO NAVIGATE, they were so good, we added a special page for his links.

Think Local, Go Global
In addition to the US, we have had a substantial number of visitors from Canada, Australia, Great Britain, Japan, Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Netherlands, Greece, Germany, Spain , Austria, as well as Europe… The internet is an amazing thing!

Thank you
As we head into fall, we will continue to expand and polish Ashoreschool.com. We hope our efforts help your school to be successful, by better preparing your students before they get to your class.

Good luck,
Tom and Marilyn

Subj: Thank You, Thank you, Thank you!
My husband and I "head out" tomorrow for a weekend anniversary trip that includes our 101 class. I actually feel like I know what I am doing and will not be at a complete loss! Thank you for your website. Thank you for making me feel like I have enough of a handle on it to take the plunge.

Wish us luck…
